"TRAIN YOUR SUPERVISORS"

First line managers, supervisors and team leaders remain a core component in the leadership chain. They have the greatest impact over the largest number of people and are fundamental to strategy execution. It is at this level of leadership that the 'rubber hits the road'.

Training supervisors is once again priority, simply because ineffective supervisors make any meaningful progress in a business (regardless of how brilliant the ideas) virtually impossible.

So - train your supervisors!

This is easier said than done. Supervisors have often been neglected and have had a hard time reconciling workforce realities with strategy. Not surprisingly they can be skeptical of training and the results it promises to deliver.

This is where training becomes an art, where appropriate learning methodology becomes essential and where DYNA does so well.

Programme Title: CORE Supervisory Skills Programme

Programme Description:

Core is a dynamic and practical programme aimed at energising Supervisors into radically improving their skills and the performance of their team. This is achieved through DYNA'S advanced learning methodology as well as workplace visits to assist in application of learning.

Phase 1 Learners will be able to:

  • Gain confidence and be able to present ideas and proposals
  • Improve communication and break down barriers preventing effective communication
  • Understand what factors contribute to a team's success
  • Practice building teams
  • Understand leadership and leadership styles
  • Practice a participative leadership style
  • Deal with grievances
  • Manage their time and improve personal productivity
  • Clarify their role and that of team members'
  • Empower team members and hold them accountable for agreed performance
  • Back in the workplace time and productivity project
  • Back in the workplace role clarification project
  • Back in the workplace skills application feedback

Phase 2 Learners will be able to:

  • Build winning teams
  • Set team goals and performance standards
  • Compile and implement plans
  • Provide written feedback and reports
  • Will know when to meet and how to run effective meetings
  • Will understand disciplinary procedure
  • Will have the confidence and skill necessary to uphold your disciplinary procedures
  • Back in the workplace planning for effective projects
  • Back in the workplace disciplinary procedure project

Phase 3 Learners will be able to:

  • Lead and participate in diverse teams
  • Build confidence & skills in team members through effective feedback
  • Provide feedback on change and progress made at work
  • Understand the supervisor's role in talent retention
  • Understand the principles of world class
  • Understand those aspects of South African labour legislation that impact on the business
  • Apply problem solving and decision making tools and techniques
  • Understand the supervisor's role in ensuring fair labour relations
  • Analyse team performance

Target Audience:

This programme is intended for existing or newly appointed supervisors.

Entry Requirements:

The following entry requirements apply: NQF level 3 OR General Education and Training Certificate (Grade 9) with relevant work experience.

IMPALA PLATINUM

I first sent somebody on the DYNA CORE Supervisory course about three years ago. It was immediately apparent that this course was different to previous Supervisory courses we had utilised. The attendees were very enthusiastic about attending. The format of a three week course over three months works very well with the learner being given homework and assignments between each segment.

I also like the interaction with DYNA in that they actually come to your company to discuss the learner's progress and how the learner can perform better at the next part of the course. At these feedback sessions, the learner's Supervisor and/or Manager are involved which adds to the learning process.

The learners not only learn the fundamentals of Supervision but they also learn a lot about themselves over the three months. They return to work highly motivated and keen to put into practice what they have learnt. The fact that people from many different companies from various sectors are involved in each course is also excellent in that the attendees learn a lot from the other course participants.

I also like the "graduation ceremony" which is held at the end of the course where the learner's Manager presents the course certificate to them. I always make a point of attending these as it shows that we, as Manager's, are interested in the employee's development.

Since that first participant, I have sent several people on subsequent courses and, without exception, all have enjoyed and learnt from the experience. I believe the course also provides amazing value for money given that the cost is less than one can pay for one or two days of a course or seminar these days. The DYNA CORE course has now become the standard Supervisory course for employees at Impala Platinum Refineries.
